Training for not-so-new technologies in which instructors shouldn’t be bounded by
Current practice paradigms isn’t necessarily desirable. The field of nursing itself isn’t static, and it’s not likely that an instructor can be certified for teaching nursing without having been doing the job for several years. This training presents the platform, methodology, and protocol for an advanced study that explores new nursing student technologies, such as eCommerce, medical transcription, electronic medical records, and understanding electronic healthcare data. Such training also often involves internship in a clinical or hospital setting, which makes the curriculum more interesting for the students who participate.
The Interpreters: The field of nursing has a number of cultural and linguistic diversity, which forces instructors to learn different languages and dialects. Technology can complicate this problem considerably, as not all nurses speak English, which means that some of the training will involve learning to read medical reports and procedure manuals in various languages. Interpreters are especially valuable for nursing student technologies, as they have to be able to communicate with and interpret various languages, but they don’t have to be fluent speakers. Such a program allows for the reuse of notes, as the student can simply refer back to an interpreter’s explanation of a passage and use the same words, phrases, or idiom when speaking to other nurses.
The Interchangeable Textiles
Technology has made many advances over the past decade, but one breakthrough stands out above all others as being among the most important: digital textiles. These textile devices allow nurses to communicate more with their patients, as well as to increase the level of interaction between the two parties. With advances in text messaging technology, it is now possible for nurses to send images and short messages to patients with little or no noticeable difference in the actual communication medium. There are a number of companies that have developed intertextual devices and nursing education has taken full advantage of them, creating programs such as the interactive whiteboard that allows nurses to take notes and enter information in a virtual space on the screen. Other examples of textile-based technology use include hand held digital devices that allow nurses to record vital signs or symptoms, and tablets that have multiple screens – one for data input, and another for reading information out loud or sending a report to a third party.
The Web: While technology has helped to make communication easier for nurses, it hasn’t helped to create a market for the services of nurse educators. As a result, there has been a move towards online education – from traditional teaching and research models to distance learning. There are a number of schools and universities that have developed programs that connect students directly with experienced nurses who can provide information about care giving. This type of student-centered learning has grown at a rapid pace over the past five years and nurse educators are starting to see more value in the web.
The creation of the nursing student portal was born out of the need to help nursing students to better understand and gain access to online resources. This video series is designed to give nurses the ability to engage students in a hands on learning experience. For example, in the past few years a wide variety of textbooks have been developed specifically for nursing schools that feature comprehensive coverage of the medical field and can be accessed through the Internet. Another significant development is the availability of virtual learning systems that allow nursing trainees to go through modules of study at their own pace. This has led to a marked increase in the number of nurses pursuing higher education through online programs.
